Floral Wreath with Butterfly Sun-catcher

Hello from Geri Beam with a fun new project creating a sun-catcher using the Floral Wreath and Butterfly digital cut files. Let this colorful creation hang in your window and bring a smile to your face when the sun shines through it.


Let us start with the supplies needed to create this project.

Supply List

  • JWCF 970 Floral Wreath Digital Cutfile

  • JWCF 1207 Butterfly Digital Cutfile

  • Black cardstock

  • Alcohol Ink – Ranger

    • Colors used: Juniper, Honeycomb, Botanical, Purple Twilight, Sailboat Blue, Wild Plum and Coral

  • Flexible cutting mat from the dollar store to make stencils

  • Pixie Spray  – iCraft - Repositional Adhesive for Stencils

  • Clear film for Laser/Copier – Computer Grafix or any acetate sheets that can take heat

  • Art Glitter Glue

  • Fishing line or colorful thread

  • Hole punch



Step-by-step Instructions

  1. Use JWCF 970 Floral Wreath Digital Cutfile to cut two black card stock wreaths.The size of wreath I used was 6 inches high by 6.73 inches wide. Aren't they lovely?

  2. Use JWCF 1207 Butterfly Digital Cutfile to cut two black butterflies to fit inside the wreath. The size of butterfly which will fit perfectly into the wreath is 1.6 inches high by 2.51 inches wide.

  3. Use a flexible cutting mat to make stencils by cutting one of the wreath.

  4. Use your cutting machine to make an outline of the wreath and the butterfly.

  5. Use film/acetate to cut one outline of the wreath and one of the butterfly.

  6. Use Pixie Spray on the back of the wreath stencil and place on top of the film outline.

  7. Drip alcohol ink on top of the stencil. Let partially dry and repeat with another layer of ink to make colors more intense.

  8. Let ink dry completely.

  9. Remove stencil from the wreath. It should look like this.

  10. Use Artglitter Glue to paste black card stock outline on top and bottom of the colored film of the wreath.

  11. For the butterfly, use Artglitter glue to paste the black card stock on one side of the film.

  12. Turn the film over and drip alcohol ink on the back side of the film.

  13. Let ink dry completely.

  14. Place the other back card stock on top of the alcohol ink side using Artglitter Glue.

  15. Determine angle and placement of the butterfly inside of the wreath that appeals to you.

  16. Glue the butterfly to the center of the wreath.

  17. Choose a place to punch a hole to hang wreath.

  18. Use string or fishing line to create loop to hang the wreath.

  19. You have completed all the steps to make this project. You can make it any size you want. That is the beauty of having such wonderful digital cut files. They always turn out great. I hope you have enjoyed this project.
